The Tutorial Assistance Program is part of the support services provided by the Learning Center. Tutoring is provided either on a walk-in basis or by individual appointment in most undergraduate classes. Tutors work in the Learning Center as well as in the residence halls. We also provide tutors who serve Special Services students.


TUTOR JOB DESCRIPTION/QUALIFICATIONS

DUTIES

  1. Learns tutoring techniques through participation in tutor training sessions and other training techniques
  2. Establishes rapport with students and respects their right to confidentiality at all times.
  3. Using specialized skills evaluates the student's present level of knowledge.
  4. Independently instructs, teaches, demonstrates or by other means imparts knowledge to students on a one to one basis or in a group.
  5. Devises alternate tutoring methods when working with students with special needs.
  6. Makes appropriate referrals to other student and/or academic services on campus.
  7. Maintains accurate records of appointments made, hours worked and students tutored.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Sophomore status with minimum of 3 quarter in residence at UCR
  2. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and GPA of 3.3 or above in the classes to be tutored
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Sensitivity of needs of students who come from a variety of academic backgrounds as well as levels of preparedness
  5. Respects the racial, ethical, national, political, religious, physical and sexual diversity of the students
  6. Willingness to work as a team member with other students and professional staff employed by the Learning Center as well as other members of the campus community
  7. Additional requirements may apply to tutors in certain subject areas.
